SHORE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL | BEVERLY, MA

More Info

Shore Country Day School, a private day school from pre-K through ninth grade, previously used a combination of cafeteria/gymnasium as their dining hall. The existing facility was dark, well-worn over the years, and not of a quality equal to other buildings on campus nor commensurate with its functional importance.

Located tangential to the main elliptical entrance drive and front lawn, the dining hall also served with the adjacent library as the gateway to the campus beyond. In order to capitalize on its location and its primary role in School affairs - not just as dining hall, but as exam center, dance hall, film venue, and facility for other campus wide functions - the design adds a transparent “wrapper” that allows the internal activities to be “on stage”.

The additions include a handicapped accessible ramp as the new main entrance and a new “private” dining room for the ninth graders that overlooks the campus ellipse. A new entrance canopy with raised landing serves as an exterior meeting place. The landing incorporates a site wall and furniture that defines one side of an accessible ramp on the south side of the ninth grade dining room.

The height of the addition mitigates the scale of the existing rectangular gym “box” and relates the renovated building to its existing context. The green color stucco walls above the addition refer back to the green roof of the adjacent library; the red base acknowledges the red brick of the attached administration building.

The existing kitchen and servery were comletely renovated. A new raised floor at the level of the existing servery now extends over the former gym floor area. Below the raised floor there is new mechanical distribution.
